Synopsis
Based on the real cases of Ed and Lorraine Warren, the film follows the Perron family as they move into a farmhouse in Rhode Island and begin experiencing increasingly intense paranormal events. The Warrens are called in to investigate what will become one of the most extreme cases of their careers.
Analysis
James Wan took a haunted house story — the most overused subgenre in horror — and turned it into a top-tier cinematic experience. With flawless direction and masterful tension-building, he proved commercial horror can be art. The scares are perfectly constructed — the clapping game in the dark is a masterclass. The production is first-rate: cinematography, sound design, score.
Performances
Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga have incredible chemistry as the Warrens. Farmiga brings a vulnerability that humanizes the supernatural. Lili Taylor as Carolyn Perron conveys the terror of a mother who sees her family under threat. Ron Livingston as Roger is the perfect skeptic who slowly gives in to the evidence.
Final Verdict
5 skulls because it's the film that proved mainstream horror can be art. Everything works: direction, performances, scares, production. If anyone says commercial horror can't be good, put on The Conjuring and let them eat their words.
Final score
5/5 skulls
