Synopsis

A popular horror YouTube channel organizes a special Halloween livestream from the Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital — a real abandoned location in South Korea considered one of the most haunted places on earth. Seven young people enter the hospital equipped with body cams and streaming gear. Their goal: reach room 402, the room no one has ever managed to open. As they push forward, they discover the hospital's legend is far more real than they thought.

Analysis

Gonjiam is what happens when found footage meets the streaming era. The premise of a horror livestream at a real haunted location is brilliant because it mirrors exactly what thousands of YouTubers do today. Jung Bum-shik uses multiple cameras — GoPros, drones, fixed cams — to create visual coverage that feels modern and authentic. The first half slowly builds tension as the crew explores the hospital. The second half is an unstoppable escalation of horror. Room 402 and what's behind it is pure nightmare fuel.

Performances

Wi Ha-joon (who later blew up with 'Squid Game') leads the cast as Ha-joon with natural charisma. Park Ji-hyun as Charlotte brings the energy of the streamer who takes everything lightly until she can't anymore. The cast works because they feel like a real group of friends making YouTube content — the jokes, the dynamics, it all feels authentic until the horror consumes them.

Final Verdict

4 skulls of pure modern Asian horror. It's the best found footage film of the last 10 years. The final 30 minutes are a horror rollercoaster that doesn't stop. If you liked REC, Gonjiam is its natural evolution for the digital age. A must-watch.

Final score
